Mulberry Class - Year 5

Welcome to the Summer term in Year 5.
Our topic title is 'Curtain call' and we are CREATING. This term we will be celebrating Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee by learning all about her and her family. We will write a biography based on our Queen and research her family tree, looking at Monarchs that have been before her. We will travel to London on our whole school trip and look at a real life Cityscape as we create our own cityscapes in Art. We will use our Geographical skills to read maps about London in school as we prepare to visit the city. We will also learn all about Living things and their habitats in Science.
To top all of this off, we will be taking part in the end of Year Production along with Year 6 so watch this space for more information about the play that we are going to perform and the part that Year 5 will play in it!

Your teacher is Mrs Donnelly.

Mrs Pinder will work with us on a Monday and Tuesday.

Year 5 is the first of two year groups working in Upper Key Stage 2. We pride ourselves on encouraging the children to really develop their independence as we begin to prepare them for secondary education. However, there is a lot of fun and learning to be had before then so you will see all of our children embracing the Loxwood Way key characteristics of Collaboration, Perseverance and Happiness. The children make great strides in their progress as they take on a greater role in developing their own learning, self assessing and identifying their next steps. We are very focused on developing the necessary skills in Maths and English but ensure that there is plenty of opportunity for the children to explore and apply these skills across the curriculum.

Below you will find our topic web and homework grid for this term's topic:
"Curtain Call"
In Year 6, homework tasks are compulsory. To prepare you for this, I am expecting two pieces of home learning from each of you, one this half term and one next half term. Below you will find the homework grid which is the same one that Year 6 have, they are required to hand in more tasks each half term. The dates at the bottom are deadlines that I would like the homework to be submitted by but of course you can hand in work earlier and you can do more than the two required tasks if you would like to. I am looking forward to seeing your home learning!!
Year 5 are currently learning their spellings in school. Children can still practise these using their Spelling Frame logins.

The English curriculum is full of lots of technical grammatical terms. Please have a look at the government's glossary below to find out what they all mean.
