Welcome from Miss Dowley

Welcome to our School

‘Pupils are happy.  They enjoy attending this small school.  They feel safe and are confident in school staff.  Staff know each pupil individually and pupils appreciate this.  Pupils understand the ‘Loxwood Way’.  They told inspectors that kindness was the most important value in their school.’

Ofsted Report January 2022

We are a small village primary school situated in the rural and picturesque location of Loxwood with around 170 children.  The school was opened in 1967 and has grown since then.  We have seven spacious classrooms, a large hall and a brand new library.  The infant classes share a set of unisex toilets but the junior classes have their own toilets within each classroom.  Outside, we have a tremendous amount of space: a huge field, a large playground, our ‘Humpty’ area, a big outside play space for our infant children and our own massive woodlands learning area.  Within this, we have various activity trails, climbing walls and a sandpit for long jumps.

We have seven classes across the school. Our infants is made up of Oak Class (Reception), Cherry Class (Year 1) and Willow Class (Year 2).  Juniors consists of Rowan Class (Year 3), Sycamore Class (Year 4), Mulberry Class (Year 5) and Chestnut Class (Year 6).

We believe in enabling our children to become life-long learners through a rich, creative and purposeful curriculum that teaches through real life and meaningful experiences, making links and connections and enabling our children to become responsible future citizens.

We value outdoor learning and the positive impacts it has upon well-being and provide a range of experiences both through PE and Sports and through Woodlands learning.  We are proud to hold the Platinum School Games Sports Mark award, which recognises all the hard work that goes into enabling our children to access a range of PE and sports activities, including competitions and events.  We have a specialist PE coach who works with us every Wednesday enabling all of our children to access high quality sports coaching.  Our Year 6 Sports Leaders support our children at lunchtimes by teaching them games and activities.  All children have access to Woodlands learning every two weeks with our Woodlands teachers.  This is all year round and enables our children to develop a close relationship with the natural world around them.

We provide wrap around care via our breakfast and after school club (Woodpeckers) and provide a range of other after school club activities that children can enjoy.

We have four houses that the children join when they enter our school – Malham, Drungewick, Southlands and Brewhurst.  The children earn house points, which are counted at the end of each week and the winning house is announced in our Celebration assembly.  During the year, we have inter-house matches including our famous Pancake Race!  We have two House Captains per house, who help to ensure their houses run as effectively as possible.

We have an active School Council, which consists of two children from each class.  They meet fortnightly and make decisions on various aspects of school life.  We use a democratic process where children nominate themselves, make a presentation to the class on why they should be the school councillor and then the children vote for their favourite two.  The two children with the highest votes are chosen to represent their class.

We also have Eco Warriors, who use a similar process to our school council, for being nominated.  Our Eco Warriors help us to make sure we are doing all that we can to support caring for our planet through reducing our carbon footprint and our Eco motto of ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’. We are working towards our Green Flag award.

In February 2023, we appointed Wellbeing Ambassadors to help improve our pupils wellbeing across the school.

Our Recent Ofsted Inspection (18/19th January 2022) continues to recognise us as a Good school, which we are extremely proud of.  Follow the link to read the report.
