Sports Reports 2021-2022

District Sports
What a fantastic day we had at District Sports on Friday 24th June. We competed against 8 other schools from the Horsham District in the 'small schools event'. Each child took part in a sprint, a long-distance run, a vortex howler throw and a standing long jump. Our Year 3 and 4 team came 1st overall and our Year 5 and 6s came 4th. We were incredibly proud of the children's encouragement of others, resilience and determination.
Please use the link below to read the sports report and individual results from our fantastic achievements.  Particular mentions to our participants who finished in the top ten overall in their categories:
Year 3 & 4 girls - Viktori (1st) and Elouise (4th)
 Year 3 & 4 boys - Cameron (5th), Adam (6th) and Harrison (7th)
 Year 5 & 6 girls - Holly (2nd), Ana (8th) and Amelia (10th)
 Year 5 & 6 boys - Zac (2nd)

Year 6 v Year 6 Parents' Matches

We finally managed to run the Year 6 v Year 6 Parents' matches (in the rain). Considering it was a rearranged date, we had a fantastic turn out with 11 parents playing as well as some wonderful spectators!

The football was a hard fought, competitive match which was won by the parents 8 - 4. Some children who stood out were: Daniel who scored a hat trick; Zac for wonderful passing, dribbling and scoring a great goal; Jayden for some unbelievable goalkeeping; and Emily for superb defending.

Due to the large number of people who wanted to play, we were able to play a three team tournament. Even though the children lost 24-5, they played some fantastic netball and made much better use of the court (to avoid the parental height advantage). Children to mention from the netball were: Dominic and Halle who both scored two goals; Tate for relentless jumping and super distraction techniques; and Amelia for some fantastic defending.

A huge thank you for all of your support.

Horsham District Cross Country Festival at Christs' Hospital

On Tuesday 1st March, 12 children from Year 5 and 6 represented the school in the Horsham District Cross Country Festival held at Christs' Hospital. This was a huge event with 19 other schools competing and 120 children in each race.

We had a lovely afternoon with all the children running incredibly well and trying their best.

However, we would like to congratulate two children in particular: Emily who won the girls race and to Zac who came second in the boys! These were incredible achievements and both children have now been selected to represent Central Sussex at the Sussex School Games 2022 Cross Country Final on Thursday. We wish them the best of luck!

U-KS2 Basketball Festival at The Weald

On Wednesday 9th February, some of our Year 5 and 6 children competed in a Basketball Festival at The Weald. They started the afternoon with some coaching from Mr Meaney (who is head of PE at The Weald) and then played games against four other schools.

We had a fantastic start winning our first game against Slinfold: lots of children managed to score resulting in the game finishing 8-4 to us.

We then felt slightly overwhelmed when we faced some all boys teams who had clearly had a lot of practice and some very tall, skillfull players! However, we worked hard and didn't give up. We lost our next three games: Loxwood 2 -6  Camelsdale ; Loxwood 2 - 8 Barns Green; Loxwood 0 - 6 St Mary's Pulborough.

Congratulations to Billy-Ray who was our top scorer with 4 and Isabella who was really encouraging and supportive throughout.

"I found it really fun. I was able to enhance my basketball skills and it made me really proud representing the school for the first time." (Ellie, Year 5)

U-KS2 Tag Rugby at The Weald

On Wednesday 19th January some Year 6 children represented the school in a locality Tag-Rugby tournament which was held at The Weald. After a few warm up games and an introduction to the rules from Mr Meaney, we played four games.

The first game we beat Billingshurst 45-0 with Daniel and Zac each scoring 3 tries.

During the second game, we played Barns Green and lost 5-15. This was a tough game as a lot of our tries were disallowed.

We won both our third and fourth games convincingly against St Mary’s Pulborough and Rudgwick (30-0 and 50-0).

Having won 3 out of 4 of our games, we came 2nd overall and each received silver medals.

Congratulations to Chloe and Lola who represented the school for the first time and both go stuck in tagging other players and Chloe even scored a try. Our main try scorer across the four games was Daniel with a total of 9 tries.

We were able to use our lessons on passing and formation with Mr Green to help us beat the other teams.

A huge thank you to the the Year 10s from the Weald who had a tricky job or refereeing the games; to Mr Meaney for running the event; our parents who helped transport us there; and Miss Price for organising the team and keeping us motivated.

KS2 Autumn House Matches 2021

We were finally able to revert back to our original format for house matches (without COVID bubble restrictions. Sadly parents were unable to attend but the children still enjoyed it nevertheless. All KS2 children represented their house in either Hockey to Football and were able to demonstrate some of the skills they have learnt during their PE lessons with Mr Green in the Autumn Term.

This was also the first opportunity of the year to fully utilise our new House Captains and Sports Leaders. The House Captains managed their teams and tried to keep them as even as possible. The Sports Leaders worked really hard, taking on many roles including time keeping, scoring and referring the games.

KS1 Multiskills at The Weald School

Willow Class had a brilliant time on Wednesday taking part in a KS1 Multi-Skills festival organised by The Weald School. We braved the cold and headed outside along with six other locality schools to try out some sports skills activities. We jumped, bounced, balanced, sprinted and aimed and supported each other superbly all afternoon. Mrs Rolland felt very proud of the whole class as they all represented our school superbly, demonstrating all three school values: collaboration, perseverance and happiness! Everyone had a go at absolutely everything, which is brilliant! You are all multi-skills superstars Willow Class!

Isla G said “I had an amazing time and really enjoyed it.” Alfie said “It was so much fun!”

Talented Athletes Workshop

What a treat to finally be allowed to send children out for sports events again!
Our first lucky children were a group of Year 5 and 6s who attended a Talented Athletes Workshop hosted by Mr Meaney at The Weald. Throughout the day, the children participated in activities including: Orienteering, SAQ (Speed Agility and Quickness), Fitness and Ball Skills.

"It was a really enjoyable day and we had a wide range of activities to do." Emily (Y6)

" I liked how the activities were different to last time." Isabella (Y6)

"We got to socialise with other schools which was really nice." Daniel (Y6)
Sports Leaders
In order to support and select our Sports Leaders, Mr Green spent three session with the Year 5s in the summer term. They were encouraged to think about the values needed to make a good leader; plan and deliver sports activities to other children.

Well done to Billy-Ray, Daniel, Hannah, Emily, Isabella who have all been selected.

Throughout the year they will have to officiate, coach, and lead activities. They will also help organise intra-school competitions and school sport opportunities.
