Welcome from the SENDCO
Welcome to the SEND and Inclusion section of our website.
At Loxwood Primary School, we believe that every child deserves to feel valued, understood and successful. We are committed to creating an inclusive environment where all children can thrive academically, socially and emotionally.
Understanding and truly knowing every child is at the heart of our ethos. We take time to understand children's strengths, interests, personalities and individual ways of learning so that they feel safe, happy and ready to succeed.
We recognise that there are times in all of our lives when we need additional support, and this is no different for children. Whether a child requires short-term support, targeted intervention or long-term provision, we work closely with families, staff and external professionals to ensure that the right support is in place at the right time.
At Loxwood, inclusion is everyone's responsibility. We are proud of our nurturing approach and our commitment to ensuring that every child is able to participate fully in school life and achieve their potential.
If you have any concerns about your child's learning, development or wellbeing, please do not hesitate to contact your child's class teacher or myself.
Miss Daisy Price
SENDCO & Deputy Headteacher
Neurodiversity at Loxwood
We recognise that neurodiversity is a natural part of human diversity and celebrate the many different ways in which people think, learn and process information.
Our school supports children with a wide range of strengths and needs, including dyslexia, dyscalculia, autism, ADHD, speech and language needs, sensory differences and social, emotional and mental health needs.
We actively promote understanding and acceptance of neurodiversity through assemblies, awareness events, newsletters, displays and curriculum opportunities. Throughout the year, children take part in events such as Dyslexia Awareness Week, Dyscalculia Awareness initiatives and Autism Acceptance Month to help develop understanding, empathy and respect for differences.
We encourage children to recognise their own strengths, develop confidence in themselves as learners and understand that everyone learns differently.
Dyslexia and Dyscalculia Friendly Practice
At Loxwood Primary School, we are committed to developing a learning environment that supports children with dyslexia, dyscalculia and other specific learning differences.
We recognise that difficulties with literacy and mathematics can affect confidence, self-esteem and access to learning. Through early identification, adaptive teaching and targeted intervention, we aim to remove barriers and help all children experience success.
Staff are trained to identify potential indicators of dyslexia and dyscalculia and may use observations, assessment information, checklists and screening tools to help identify barriers to learning. We understand that these learning differences exist across the full range of abilities and that every child's profile of strengths and needs is unique.
Our classrooms incorporate dyslexia-friendly and dyscalculia-friendly approaches including:
- Multi-sensory teaching approaches
- Explicit teaching of vocabulary and concepts
- Visual supports and scaffolds
- Chunked instructions and reduced cognitive overload
- Retrieval practice and opportunities for overlearning
- Concrete resources and manipulatives
- Precision Teaching approaches
- Coloured overlays and reading rulers where appropriate
- Assistive technology and alternative methods of recording
- Adapted resources to improve accessibility and independence
We believe that different does not mean less able and are committed to helping every child develop confidence in themselves as a learner.
ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant)
We are very fortunate to have Mrs Green, who is an integral member of our mental health and wellbeing team. Mrs Green works from Tuesday to Friday each week in The Nest, providing valuable emotional support to pupils across the school.
ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) is a nationally recognised intervention designed to support the emotional wellbeing of children and young people. ELSAs receive specialist training and ongoing supervision from Educational Psychologists, enabling them to support pupils in understanding and managing their emotions.
ELSA support can help children with:
- Emotional literacy
- Self-esteem and confidence
- Friendship difficulties
- Social skills
- Anxiety and worries
- Managing strong feelings
- Emotional regulation
- Relationships
- Conflict resolution
- Growth mindset
- Loss and bereavement
- Bullying concerns
- Social and therapeutic stories
- Problem solving
Children may be referred through class teachers, the SENDCO, parents, outside agencies or through discussions with the child themselves.
ELSA interventions are usually short-term programmes lasting between half a term and a full term. Sessions are personalised to meet individual needs and include clear targets to help children develop strategies and confidence that can be applied both in school and beyond.
Our Inclusive Vision
At Loxwood Primary School, inclusion sits at the heart of everything we do.
We aim for all of our children to become successful lifelong learners through an inclusive, purposeful and engaging curriculum that enables children to learn in a safe, meaningful and enjoyable environment.
We celebrate diversity and recognise that children learn, communicate and experience the world in different ways. We strive to remove barriers to learning, promote independence and ensure every child has equal opportunities to participate fully in school life.
We maintain high expectations for all learners and believe that every child has strengths, talents and potential. Through positive relationships, adaptive teaching and a nurturing school culture, we aim to ensure that all children feel respected, valued and able to flourish.
Meet the SEND Team
Our SEND and Inclusion Team works collaboratively to ensure that every child receives the support they need to flourish.
The team includes our SENDCO, Learning Mentor, ELSA, class teachers, teaching assistants, senior leaders and governors. Together, we work closely with families and a range of external professionals to identify needs, remove barriers to learning and celebrate success.
Our SENDCO, Miss Daisy Price, is also Deputy Headteacher and a member of the Senior Leadership Team. Alongside our SEND Governor, she oversees SEND provision throughout the school and works closely with staff, families and outside agencies to ensure children receive high-quality support.
All staff receive ongoing professional development in SEND and inclusion. Training may include autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, speech and language development, sensory needs, emotional wellbeing and adaptive teaching strategies. We believe that continual professional learning is essential in ensuring all children receive the support they deserve.
The SEND Process
We are committed to identifying needs as early as possible.
If you are worried about your child's learning, development or wellbeing, please speak to your child's class teacher in the first instance. They will be happy to discuss any concerns you may have.
Where concerns are identified, support may include classroom adaptations, targeted interventions, closer monitoring or additional assessment. The class teacher may also seek advice from the SENDCO.
We follow the graduated approach outlined in the SEND Code of Practice:
Assess → Plan → Do → Review
This process ensures that support is carefully planned, regularly reviewed and adapted according to a child's progress and changing needs.
Where appropriate, we may work with a range of outside agencies including Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Learning and Behaviour Advisory Teachers and the Autism and Social Communication Team.
For a small number of children with significant and long-term needs, an Education, Health and Care Needs Assessment (EHCNA) may be considered.

What Our Children Say
At Loxwood Primary School, we believe that children's views are an essential part of developing an inclusive school. We regularly seek feedback from pupils about their experiences, the support they receive and how we can continue to improve.
Our most recent pupil voice showed that:
- Children know who to talk to if they need help with their learning.
- Children feel safe and supported in school.
- Children can identify trusted adults they can speak to when they are worried or upset.
- Children feel included in school life and are encouraged to participate in activities and opportunities.
- Children understand the support available to them and can explain how adults help when learning becomes challenging.
- Children are proud of their achievements and enjoy celebrating their successes.
Some of the things our children told us include:
"If I need help, I ask a teacher and they help me."
"There are adults I can talk to if I'm worried."
"I feel proud of what I can do at school."
"The special things in my classroom help me learn."
"When work is difficult, teachers help me understand it."
"I feel safe at school."
We use pupil voice to help shape our provision and ensure that support reflects the needs and experiences of the children who access it.
Parent Partnership
Parents and carers are experts in their children and play a vital role in helping us achieve the best possible outcomes.
We believe that positive relationships between home and school are central to successful SEND provision. We value open communication, honest conversations and collaborative problem-solving. By working together, we can ensure that children receive consistent support, feel understood and are able to thrive both in school and beyond.
Parents are involved throughout the Assess, Plan, Do, Review process and contribute to discussions regarding strengths, needs, outcomes and support strategies. We recognise that parents know their children best and we actively seek their views when making decisions about support and provision.
We operate an open-door approach and encourage parents to speak with us whenever they have concerns, questions or information they would like to share. Through SEND Tea and Chat sessions, review meetings, Annual Reviews, parent workshops and ongoing communication, we aim to ensure that families feel listened to, supported and involved.
SENDIAS West Sussex Education Partnership Protocol
At Loxwood Primary School, we are proud to have signed up to the SENDIAS Education Partnership Protocol. This recognises our commitment to working in genuine partnership with parent carers of children with Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND).
By meeting the criteria set out in the protocol, we demonstrate that we actively listen to, involve and value the views of families. It reflects our ongoing commitment to building positive, respectful relationships with parent carers and ensuring that every child with SEND receives the support they need to flourish.
The protocol promotes open communication, collaborative working and shared decision-making between schools and families. We are proud that our partnership with parents has been recognised through this award and remain committed to continually developing our practice.
For more information about the protocol and the work of SENDIAS, please visit the West Sussex SENDIAS website.
Together, we can create the best possible outcomes for every child.

We are proud of the positive relationships we build with families and remain committed to working in partnership with parents and carers to achieve the very best outcomes for every child.
Transition Support
We recognise that transitions can be both exciting and challenging for children and families.
Carefully planned transition arrangements help children feel safe, prepared and confident as they move through different stages of their education.
Support may include:
- Additional visits
- Transition booklets and social stories
- Photographs of key adults and learning environments
- Meetings with parents and professionals
- Enhanced transition programmes
- Liaison between schools and settings
- Personalised transition plans where appropriate
We work closely with families and receiving schools to ensure that information is shared effectively and that support continues seamlessly.
Supporting Families
At Loxwood Primary School, we recognise that families may sometimes need additional support and guidance. We work closely with parents and carers to help them access appropriate services, advice and financial support where needed.
Pupil Premium
Pupil Premium is additional government funding provided to schools to help ensure that disadvantaged pupils can achieve their full potential, both academically and socially.
At Loxwood Primary School, we use this funding to remove barriers to learning and provide targeted support that improves outcomes for eligible pupils. We recognise that disadvantage can affect children in different ways and tailor support to meet individual needs.
All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to Universal Infant Free School Meals. Families may also be eligible for additional Pupil Premium funding based on household income. Registering your child, even if they choose not to take the free school meals, enables the school to access valuable funding that can be used to support learning, wellbeing and enrichment opportunities.
If you think your child may be eligible, please contact the school office in confidence.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I raise a concern about my child?
If you have concerns about your child's learning, development, behaviour or wellbeing, please speak to your child's class teacher in the first instance. They know your child best within the school setting and will be able to discuss your concerns and any support that may already be in place.
Many concerns can be addressed through classroom adaptations, targeted support or short-term interventions. If further advice is needed, the class teacher may consult with the SENDCO to discuss next steps. We believe that early communication between home and school is key to ensuring children receive the support they need.
Does my child need a diagnosis to receive support?
No. A child does not need a medical diagnosis to receive support at Loxwood Primary School.
Support is based on a child's individual needs rather than a diagnosis. If a child is experiencing difficulties that are impacting their learning, social development or emotional wellbeing, we can put support in place regardless of whether a diagnosis has been made.
While diagnoses can sometimes help inform support, they are not required for us to begin identifying barriers to learning and implementing appropriate strategies.
How do you identify SEND?
We are committed to identifying children's needs as early as possible.
Teachers regularly monitor children's progress through assessment, observations, discussions with parents and pupil voice. Concerns may arise if a child is making less progress than expected, finding learning particularly challenging, or experiencing difficulties accessing school life.
Where concerns are identified, the class teacher and SENDCO will work together to explore possible barriers to learning and determine whether additional support may be beneficial. This may include observations, targeted assessments, screening tools, discussions with parents and, where appropriate, advice from external professionals.
What is an ILP?
An Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is a personalised document used to support children who are receiving SEND Support or have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
The ILP identifies a child's strengths, areas of need, agreed outcomes and the support that will be provided to help them make progress. It also includes pupil voice and opportunities for parents to contribute.
ILPs are reviewed regularly through the Assess, Plan, Do, Review process to ensure that support remains effective and reflects the child's current needs.
What support is available for dyslexia and dyscalculia?
At Loxwood Primary School, we recognise that children learn in different ways and are committed to providing dyslexia-friendly and dyscalculia-friendly learning environments.
Support may include:
- Multi-sensory teaching approaches
- Visual supports and scaffolds
- Precision Teaching
- Additional opportunities for overlearning and retrieval practice
- Concrete maths resources and manipulatives
- Chunked instructions and reduced cognitive overload
- Coloured overlays or reading rulers where appropriate
- Assistive technology and alternative recording methods
