Governing Body

The Role of the Local Governing Body

Governors play an important role in overseeing the effective running of the school. They are responsible for ensuring that the school meets its statutory obligations and for providing a clear strategic overview. The day-to-day management of the school is the responsibility of the Headteacher and school staff.

The Local Governing Body acts as a critical friend to school leaders, offering support while also holding them to account for the school’s performance and outcomes for pupils.

The governing body has three key functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction

  • Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils

  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and ensuring money is well spent

What Does This Look Like in Practice?

All governors are volunteers who give their time to support the school. The Local Governing Body meets at least once every half term and governors also visit the school regularly. Through these meetings and visits, governors monitor and evaluate the progress the school is making, while acting as both a source of challenge and support to the Headteacher and senior leaders.

In practice, this includes:

  • Visiting the school to monitor priorities within the School Improvement Plan

  • Reviewing data relating to pupil outcomes, attendance and wellbeing

  • Monitoring provision for different groups of pupils, including those who are disadvantaged and those with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND)

  • Overseeing safeguarding arrangements, behaviour and extra-curricular opportunities

  • Engaging with pupils, staff, parents and the wider school community

  • Agreeing budgets, monitoring financial performance and overseeing the school premises
